About the study

The Surname Bole was registered with the Guild of One-Name Study in 2012 and like other members of this guild it is a continuation of my own family history research.
I now look forward to finding out more about the peoples who share my family surname..

Variant names

For the purpose of this study at the moment the spelling of the surname will remain Bole.

However surname websites also link it to some of the following names which have similar spelling, or pronunciations as Bole.

This does not imply a direct relationship between the names, but may indicate names that could be mistaken for one when written down or misheard.

Name origin

This is an interesting topic, one that a definitive answer may not be found ; yet one which is of interest and requires research. - please help if you have any thoughts on the origin of this surname.

Some link the surname to a famous Anglo-Irish name from the clan O’Boyles.
Others link it with both a Saxon and Norman origin. From a Viking Chieftain in 820AD called Bolla. Which was Saxon For Bowl .
A Norman Knight who is listed in the Roll of Battle Abbey as “Bole” at the battle of Hastings in 1066. This name was spelt Boe and is reported found among landowners in Normandy
